Based on the tale by Dale Jarvis, "Lady at Number 16" tells the story of two sailors in the 1800s that help a young lady back into her mansion. They return a few hours later to realize that their night was not all that it had seemed, and it may have had a more sinister twist than expected.

BEHIND-THE-SCENES
"THE LADY AT NUMBER 16" BY DALE JARVIS
Lady at Number 16 is based off of a tale by Newfoundland author and folklorist Dale Jarvis. The story originated in the city of Valletta, Malta, and was adapted to Newfoundland folklore by Dale in 2008. He told the story at many outings such as the “Voices in the Vaults Summer Storytelling Series” in St. John’s in 2008, which can be heard in full on his website at dalejarvis.ca.
“A classic ghost story that could be told about countless port towns, this particular tale is based on a story from the walled city of Valletta, on the island of Malta. The story is said to be true, and the street in question is St. Ursola Street, in the heart of the old city.” - Dale Jarvis |
WHERE TO WATCH
DIRECTOR'S COMMENTARY
I made this film for my final film project in my second year at the Digital Filmmaking program at CNA (College of the North Atlantic). There was a lot of planning involved as this story took place in the early 1800s, so having it be a story with few characters and locations made it much easier to keep track of, especially as I was still learning the ins and outs of filmmaking. The concept of the story came when deciding what I should adapt, wether a true story or a local legend, which I pitched to a few friends and family back home in Placentia to get their thoughts, and I eventually settled on "The Lady at Number 16" by Dale Jarvis. I worked with a limited crew and resources, but all the crew and cast was excellent and can't praise them enough, and the fun really came in when we all collectively got together to dirty up the set for the second half of the film. Not many times in life do you have the opportunity to destroy a place, and the dirtier the better, and even the cast wanted to step in and help as it was just a fun process. It was obvious to see an inspiration from many works such as "The Lighthouse", "Citizen Kane" and "Ed Wood" with their creative use of vintage looks and black and white colouring, so I wanted to capture that same aesthetic in my final product where I could, from the black and white colouring, to the film grain look, and even the audio being very hollow sounding, much like many vintage films of the time. I've seen the most success from Lady at Number 16 so far, but I couldn't have finished it without many thanks to the cast, the crew, and anyone else who helped in the process.
